Why More Stable Union?

I have almost 25 years of experience working on, and in, countries in violent conflict, including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen, to name a few. I’ve run relief convoys, conducted military patrols, sat in the White House Situation Room; met, learned from, and advised gangsters, warlords, activists, rebels, statespersons, and royalty. I am worried now more about the course of events I see in the United States, where political violence and violent rhetoric are escalating, and where some of our leadership is fanning the flames. There are both strategic and tactical things we can do to stabilize the U.S., but they require abandoning some of our status-quo assumptions about what the U.S. is, and has been. I hope this newsletter serves as a forum to communicate both my concerns and some options, and that it encourages my readers to think, comment, and act.
